Spore - the Game

Spore ImageSpore is the new single player game of the famous game designer Will Wright (Sim City, The Sims) although this Electronic Arts game is quite different from anything I've seen before. It is really amazing. It is a game about... about everything really.

It is a game about evolution, civilization and space travel. You start as a microorganism lost somewhere in the ocean. You have to survive fighting and eating other creatures and evolve to a bigger, faster and smarter ... something. Yes, you have control over your own evolution. Nearly everything in the game is created by the players using several different editors. The animation is procedural, and it “knows” how the creature would move considering the nature of the creature. Eventually you will become advanced enough to get out of the ocean and step (if you have foot) on the land. After... millions of years or few hours you will come to a new phase - the tribal phase, where you are in charge of a small tribe of creatures that are just starting a civilization. Your goal is to get over the other tribes you share the planet with (sounds familiar?). Once you start being the predominant race on the planet you can go in space and develop new planets.
Not a game fan? Consider this – the music for the game was composed by Brian Eno. He worked with Kent Jolly and Aaron McLeran to make a piece of software that procedurally generates fragments for the current level of the game.
